It gives a good overall explanation to Zen Buddhism thanks to the comparative method. It goes in depth in what it tackles, but still feels a bit on the surface. In the sense that I am not fully comprehending the totality of Zen, but only those concepts which were discussed. And as I imagine, there is more to that philosophy than just those concepts. But overall really good.

Imagine writing a small introduction book on the philosophy of zen buddhism, and making it so that the only people who can understand what you are saying are a) philosophy grad students and b) people who already know quite a bit about zen buddhism. As it happens, I am both of these things, and I hated this book. This was less a book about the philosophy of zen, as it was about Heidegger and Hegel. This book is such a great example of why I can't stand continental philosophy - the need to make everything as confusing as possible, without ever trying to make yourself understandable.
