Na Sombra do Destino

I love Xhex. Great character, deep, has a lot of facets to herself and her personality. I don't like all the side stories she's adding in. It takes away from the main character of the book - too much else happening throughout the story. Simplified story line would appeal to me more.

Starting to get bored with this formula and the bad writing. I found the side stories to be either distracting or more interesting than the main story line. I dislike the constant set up of future story lines, the characters are starting to blur together. Maybe it's time for another JR Ward break.

One of my favorites, and the reread absolutely holds up.

Five stars for JM and Xhex, for the way they work together in the final battle with Lash, for the beautiful wedding, the tattoo parlor, for Tohr and the dress, for learning more about Payne, and for having TWO strong female characters narrating much of the book! Especially for working to bring back John’s humanity after last novel’s revenge sex asshole behavior.

Four stars for learning Xhex’s heritage (lovely but a bit long-winded), for Qhuinn and Blay starting to truly grapple with their situation, and for the super-speed reveal of Xhex’s mother (frustrating that it was so quickly unpacked at such a climactic scene!), and for the horror-movie tropes that played out with Lash.

Three stars for the lessers and their battles, for the unceremonious dethroning of Lash without a purpose, for the continued drug trade weirdness (I. Don’t. Care.), and for the oddness of Layla (forgot how subservient she came across as the girl who wants to have sex but falls for the first guy to kiss her. Blegh.).

Two stars for the bizarre ghost-vampire nonsense and the random human romance that came out of nowhere. Especially odd given that Muhrder’s book is still a staggering NINE novels away!

First and foremost, I am so disappointed to find out that this was not the 1st, but the 8th, in the series as I had been told. However, I loved it. The writing was different and took a little getting used to. The story seemed to break off and not make sense at times. There were so many different stories being told and even a look back. I was so please at how it all came together in the last five pages. I guessed some of it, but there were three things that had me saying (out loud) "No Way!!" For this, I would like to read the whole series and the Novellas, but I suppose I should get the order correct first.

I enjoyed John Matthew's story - but I found myself just as eager to read Blay's and Quinn's. Totally looking forward to book 9.

My second favorite from the BBD series!
I love Xhex and John/Tohr's story :)

I have a soft spot for John Matthew, so I of course loved this book. About time he had some happiness!
