The Three Musketeers is Dumas' most popular work, featuring our FOUR musketeers and their journey's through mid-1600s France and the people they meet along the way. We start with the young, "heroic", quick-witted, and angsty d'Artagnan, one of Dumas most well written characters, on his way to submit his application to work as the King's musketeers. Two mysterious forces prevent this, the man from Meung and the foreshadowed Milady de Winter.

To prevent spoilers, I'll stop the plot here. I'd like to mention how brilliantly written this novel is. Dumas is a master at writing romance and creating turmoil stemming from it; not only this, however, but also writing tragedies, with many of the affairs in this novel ending not-so gloriously. We start to see the decline in the heroicness of our protagonists, as they begin to lie, cheat, and steal to overcome the bad in their worlds. Further, I'd like to mention the excellent character writing in this novel, with genius characters like the aforementioned d'Artagnan and the intelligent Milady de Winter, this book will have you entranced in what the characters do next and how they handle seemingly impossible events.

This book also gives us a bit of insight on the beginnings and ends of friendships, and how life will eventually tear away those who we hold close to us, whether for the greater good, and how it is inevitable. The mysterious Athos, the loveable Porthos, and the Lazarist Aramis all serve as what Aristotle made famous the ethos, pathos and logos, each embodying one and combining together to make some of the most entertaining dialogue you'll hear in an adventure novel.

Maybe not the most heroic, we learn to sympathize with our heroes and relate to them and their various experiences, past and present. The Three Musketeers serves as an eternal reminder of the hardships and friendships we'll experience throughout life and how they'll all end eventually, whether we like it or not.
