But, but, there were four musketeers! I enjoyed this book, took me a little while to get into it but the plot picked up quickly. The characters were all interesting - even though the three (well, four) musketeers are the heroes of the piece, they are by no means perfect and do some downright horrible things from time to time. The main villains of the piece are also intriguing characters.
There's some amazing scenes in this book, such as the nonchalant breakfast of the musketeers whilst under considerable fire from an invading army.
Don't write this one off as a children's book - it's not. Plenty of drinking, sex, and poisons involved. All in all, a pretty good adventure story and worth reading.

A classic that still works. Such a good read and in true Dumas fashion I could barely stop for breaks.
D'artagnan la mary sue par excellence il m'a tendu tout le long
Well, it was no Count of Monte Cristo, but it was still exciting and dramatic. I was much more into the second half, when it starts focusing on the diabolical Lady de Winter. One disappointment was that I had always envisioned the Three Musketeers to be noble, just, Robin Hood-type characters. It turns out that, though brave, they are quite selfish and immoral, and tend to murder people with little provocation. None of the musketeers was very likable to me. Women also don't fare very well here and are talked about in quite unsettling terms. Dumas definitely has a gift for dialogue, though, and it's hard not to be sucked into his world of intrigue and passion.
