A surprisingly funny read from the author of the count of Monte Cristo - you can tell it’s an earlier work, and it has almost the cadence of a fairy tale at times, as D’Artagnan finds himself repeating thrice many of his conversations and adventures with each of the musketeers.

By far the most pleasant surprise was how prominent a villain and prototype femme fatale Lady de Winter was - her imprisonment in particular was fascinating and I was on the edge of my seat to see if she’d escape. I honestly could have read a book just of her.

I did feel as though D’Artagnan and the musketeers themselves were occasionally a little tiresome - the amount of jokes about losing all their money all the time and abusing innkeepers got a tad repetitive. (Except for Athos, who I loved and would also read an entire book about on his own).

Overall, a lighthearted and fun read with some interesting historical context.

Don’t read unless you want to read the whole Dartagnan romances series. (Which you should)

Is the Three Musketeers a good book? Yes absolutely, it has memorable characters and settings, interesting moral complexity (which often goes undiscussed), and has a healthy dose of wit and humor. So why the opening line? Because the main character does something horrible in this book, he tricks a woman into having sex with him… twice. It should be said that this act is shown in a negative light and that he faces very negative consequences as a result of this action and is shown to be remorseful. Either way though it leaves a rotten taste in the readers mouth so to speak. Even though I enjoyed almost every facet of the book besides this event it is hard to recommend this book because of that part.

This all being said after I read this book I read The Count of Monte Christo and decided I needed more Dumas asap. So I read the rest of the Three Musketeers/Dartagnan romances series and they rocked. There are two other books in the series, Twenty Years After and Vicomte De Bragelonne. These two books I recommend highly! Twenty Years After is a great “getting the gang back together” story with probably the most action of all the books. Vicomte de Bragelonne is a straight up epic. It’s about 260 chapters and is super long but is worth every second. It tells of the final adventures of the musketeers, the rise of Louis XIV, and heartbreak.

So if you like classics, have an interest in adventure fiction, or like reading long stories go and read the whole series. However, if you are looking to just read this book because it’s so famous, don’t do it. There are other great adventures out there that don’t have weird sexual misconduct. Personally I’d recommend Scaramouche instead. Also, while you might be a little lost starting out you could just start with 20 years after as it will be enjoyable all on its own and the characters come into their own in that one. I fully endorse reading the full D’artagnan romances but I understand that some won’t be able to get past this book.

TLDR: weird stuff in this book, skip to the second book if you really want to read about the Musketeers and their adventures.
