I would like to register a complaint with whichever committee or entity decided that this book should be considered a classic. It is most certainly one of the worst books I have ever read.

This book is basically just d'Artagnan taking everything way too personally (though, to be fair, almost everyone in this book does - it’s just that no one does it quite like him), and quite possibly having ADHD. Honestly, if he didn’t overreact to every single thing or have the attention span of a squirrel with a sword, what would the book even be about? So much of the drama could easily be avoided… But it’s not 🤣. And I sort of live for it!
Was it the best thing I’ve ever read? No, not at all. Not even close. But am I glad I’ve finally read it? Yes! Absolutely! The drama had the vibe of old-timey reality TV, and I weirdly loved that.

The story took a long time to develop and this felt a lot less modern than the count of monte cristo. It was funny at times and sometimes engaging, but mostly it felt like a drag

I was shocked by a lot of things in this book: the three musketeers are not the main character - a fourth man is who is not, for most of the book, a musketeer at all. The three musketeers are not really good guys at all, at least from a retrospective point of view. At the time I’m sure they would’ve seemed heroic. They are basically a group of rowdy teens whore always itching for a fight, taking offense at everything they can. One of them is a depressed alcoholic and a liar; one is a gambling addict who seriously needs help; and the last musketeer has his own issues that I can’t remember (I’m mixing them up a little in my mind). Most of the book, probably 65%+, felt like filler - just boring and long winded. Then there’s the main character D’Artagnan, who is a serious womanizer bordering on harassment (a sign of the times maybe) and described as particularly avid to fight. Without a doubt the best character - the most interesting - is “Milady”, the mysterious ruthless smart cunning and beautiful villain who steals the show. The scene where the seduced guard assassinated the baron and finally realized he had been thoroughly played is amazing. The only scene that really stuck with me in the whole book was a scene straight out of a Pirates Of the Caribbean movie: the musketeers are being spied on among their own ranks while on the front lines of a war and they need a private place to confer and strategize. So what do they do? They bet other soldiers that they can have breakfast for an hour in an enemy fort. They go kill everyone inside, start breakfast and proceed to have their strategy meeting while being intermittently interrupted by small sword fights and incursions by the enemy. Then they start an hour and a half just to prove a point.
If you’re looking for swordplay and intrigue, you’d be better served by the Count of Monte Cristo.

Ik had meer avontuur en minder intriges verwacht. Desondanks erg van genoten. Wel wat veel poppetjes.
Flows well and is as entertaining as The Count of Monte Cristo but made me cringe rather a lot with its implications and attitudes about society.
