For a long book this is such a fun read, I can't even put down the book!! The writing style is fun and witty. Also I never knew till I read it that there's 4 musketeers instead of 3
And I have no problem with a morally grey character, honestly I found them to be funny and give a little bit flavour
The only thing that I don't understand is this whole duelling thing, it's quite funny how d'artagnan keep on asking for a duel to almost every single character that he met

I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. Great adventure, the Musketeers were not only suave & cool, but flawed and funny. They had the tastes for the finer things in life, but not the means to support it, so they often leeched off others and sneered at others who settled for less. Great twist at the end that wasn't a cop out, which was refreshing. I'm glad I took the time to read the original!
For the first two thirds of this book, I was amazed at how developed it was as a story and a novel and how well-concieved and presented the characters were. It wasn't a great book, in any modern sense, but a surprisingly good book for when it was written. My opinion shifted in the final quarter, which was mostly the story of the novel's antagonist. There are at least a hundred pages where the three musketeers do not appear and are barely mentioned. Because of this, I wondered if the novel was originally serialized and reader attention shifted to the very interesting antagonist, and that seems to be the case.
This was a wonderful story to read, and experience after having only had Hollywood adaptations give me bits of this story in childhood. It took a little while to get into things and the style of writing took a little to get used to but what an engrossing story. This is the first of Dumas work that I’ve read but it won’t be the last if he writes he’s characters as completely. Milady is the such a completely written antagonist that she deserves to be her own star in lights.
