This seems more genuine than the previous books I've read. I have not read Ariels. This does not seem as laborious or forced as the others. She appears to be coming into her own, gaining strength, abandoning previous inhibitions & influences.

A very mixed bag but overall a pleasant read. I prefer Plath most when her poems home in on a specific character and evoke a very specific time and place; the more abstract pieces were sometimes a bit overwhelming and hard to grasp what was being portrayed. Many parts of Plath’s verse were surprisingly witty and the overall references to mythology and nature were fun. My personal favourites were: In Plaster, The Surgeon at 2 a.m., Widow, Mirror and Zoo Keeper’s Wife.

Brushing up on Plath for a presentation. This collection of 9 poems comes from the years between THE COLOSSUS and ARIEL, 1960 to late 1961. Reading this, as a stand-alone book, really reminds me that was an excellent poet when the words came to her. Girl could write. Her death was a tragic thing. It's too bad her work is often overshadowed by her death.
