How did it take me so long to read this book? I'm so glad that, when I finally did, it was the rest-of-the-world version and not the truncated US version; the point of the novel is much different if it ends when the US version (also the one Kubrick used for the movie) does. It's violent, yes, but after reading S.A. Cosby and Bret Easton Ellis, it feels almost quaint, and I love the cultural criticism and what Burgess does with language.

It wasnt the violence and abominable acts that made me cry it was the time spent trying to decipher the vocabulary used

Banned in many states, most recently Florida, for depictions of sexual violence and “objectionable language.” I read the full British edition (the American version, which Kubrick based the movie on, has the last chapter chopped off). This is a reread. I read this originally as part of a film and literature course in undergrad. Idk why I made myself read it again… it was a slog then, and it’s still a slog. The entire thing is written in a made up cockney slang, and it does something to your brain to read an entire book that way. This time around, I couldn’t help but compare the protagonist and his gang to proud boys and neo-Nazis in modern America. Lots of male entitlement and violent boredom and incel mindsets. A great deal of violence against women and children, including sexual violence. Definitely heightened the discomfort for the reader. I was even more unsettled this time around because my take away was much more sinister. This reads like a cautionary tale for violent men, to warn them of what happens when that violence is stolen from them, and how vulnerable that makes them. I felt like it advocated for men to protect their violence. It’s really chilling and twisted. Again, I would not recommend this to a novice reader or anyone without a strong stomach. But it was an important read, much more so this second time around.
