The complete lack of morality with which the narrator explains away these teenagers' lack of consent is fascinating horror, like watching a car crash you can't peel your eyes from. But I say guardedly (for I am myself a high school English teacher and saw this largely as an excercise in spotting in correct safeguarding procedures) that this book is also kind of sexy. Not because of the pre-pubescent boys, they might as well not be in it, no — it's all her: this totally insane, misogynistic, arrogant, perverted, obsessive maniac is so driven that a compelling story just rolls right out of her. We've had male characters like this for years. This is the first female one I've read...

I won't be doing my usual rating thing this time. Because... NO.
I'll start off by saying - this is my subjective opinion. If you love this book, my dislike of this book is not a personal attack, I don't hate you and I don't think you're a horrible person. We all like and enjoy different books, it just happens that I hate this... "book".
Ok... I picked up Tampa for shits and giggles. I read the first chapter when the book first came out and I remember having a laugh. But, oh boy, I was not laughing by the end of it.
Here's the thing... I've read Lolita, yes, it gave me the creeps, made me feel icky but at least Lolita was beautifully written. Tampa? Tampa reads like a bad smut that want's to be edgy. Writing is just not good. I was bored, disgusted, bored again and even more disgusted. There are a lot of books with awful main characters. Like You, Gone Girl, Lolita... Tampa's Celeste has zero redeeming qualities. The character goes on and on and on and on and on and on about stuff that doesn't matter, like how her poop smell. Seriously... I feel like Tampa was written just to be disgusting. Characters learn nothing, what's the point?
Thank God this is over. It will feel so good to delete this awful thing from my e-reader.

In transgressive fiction it’s the author’s job to make you really really uncomfortable—to face an ugly reality either within the confines of societal norms or yourself. At its best, this refusal to look away can even effect change. Basically, saying that a work of transgressive literature made the reader uncomfortable, like that’s a negative thing in itself, is sort of like being appalled that the sky is blue. So I’m going to bypass all the ways this book made me want to vom. (And did it ever. Props to the author for that!)

What’s there to talk about here then? Well first and foremost, how youth and attractiveness skews societal perceptions of people, especially women. How beauty can therefore be used and abused with very few repercussions, and in many cases, these people are glorified for their transgressions. Also, this very real culture where female sexual predators are often overlooked and/or treated more delicately.

Lots of literary references and satire in here too, which I loved. I wanted more closure for
Jack
in the end, especially
when it came to his dad. I guess I figure if he was willing to spill the beans about their affair, he might have also mentioned how she stopped him from getting him help
. All in all a quick read that’ll leave you thinking (and cringing) for a while.
