Some pretty solid science fiction with a side of Roman history. Parts of it read like Baxter read the "Roman Britain" Wikipedia page and decided to paraphrase it in novel form, but lucky for him, I love reading Wikipedia and referred to it several times while reading Coalescent. Some of the plot developments (especially near Regina's death) were pretty far fetched, but in the Xeelee Sequence, time-travel shenanigans mean this sort of thing can be plausible. (Speaking of Regina: name drawn from the Rowling grab-bag of on-the-nose Latinesque names?)

Unusual idea, but not really a successful novel in terms on characterization. Just didn't get drawn in.

This science fiction book takes a very interesting look at the future of human evolution. If I say anything else I will be spoiling. If you like hard SF, I’d say it’s worth your time.

I honestly had a terrible time getting used to the first person narration, but the story is well worth it!
