This was a little above my kiddos head-I know so many teachers who use this book but probably for 5th or 6th grade, my kids lost interest and were sort of confused by the time we reached the end. We'll try it again when they are older...

This title is very different from other mysteries for kids. Solving a series of puzzles (patterns that almost supernaturally appear)Calder and Petra seek to save a Vermeer painting.

The story ties up very nicely--almost too nicely--and the puzzles/patterns that appear are far-fetched. As an adult I'm not a huge fan, but kids will like the patterns, the deductions that Petra and Calder make, their independence and problem-solving.

I like the codes, pentominoes, and the overall "math feel" to the book. I think some of my students will enjoy reading it.

FANTABULOUS BOOK! IT HAS LOTS OF REALLY COOL MATH STUFF AND PUZZLES AND A VERY INTENSE PLOT!

Do not read this book! It is predictable, not well written, and extremely boring!

This book is one of my all time favorites. Not only does it portray a diverse set of characters, but it includes a riveting mystery, math, art, and history. It's truly a great children's book but I still love it as an adult.

More like 2.5, but I'll round up because I really enjoy Brett Hellquist's illustrations. I'll still read the other two.

there's art. a LOT of art.

A fun, smart middle grade mystery. This is definitely one of those books that's not for everyone. It will appeal to the more thoughtful, intellectual types in your class.

i don't remember this book at all but it had a chokehold on me as a child
