What a sweet, sweet novel very loosely based on the author’s first year of marriage. Set in 1928, this book gives a small glimpse of American domesticity that is often ignored in our faster, shinier lives, almost 100 years later.

This book was “dopey” (to use a word frequently used in this book). But I read it at a time in life that corresponded to some of the struggles and joys of the main characters, which made it feel a little more personal. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone, and I’m questioning how much I would still enjoy A Tree Grows in Brooklyn if I reread it as an adult, but it was a good time for me to read it.

Finished this on the train tonight. I loved it! I love the way the author wrote the characters; I fell in love with every single one. I loved going through the ups and downs of the young married couple. I totally recommend it.

It took me forever to track this book down and I finally own it! I should have been born in this decade... I love the way everyone speaks and lives.

Betty Smith does a fantastic job creating believable characters and bringing real life to her books. I was transported to the 1920s and it was wonderful. A good book is a book that leaves you with happy tears at the end.
