Apart from being just a beautifully written, fun story, this book has easily the most (believably) inclusive cast of characters I've ever encountered. It's nice to see such diversity not as a plot point or focus, but just as an accepted, expected part of life. Kudos to the author for making it seem completely natural and effortless!
