A refreshing change from the usual middle aged white detective with a drinking problem that seems to be the staple of most police officer based crime fiction. Hardeep 'Harry' is an interesting character. The complex Asian culture of Bradford makes an intriguing setting. I would like to read more of the series after this taster.

‘Darkness Rising’ follows Detective Inspector Harry Virdee as bodies start showing up in Bradford - deaths as a result of two rival drug gangs.

I really didn’t enjoy this book. This is a quick reads and it was a short and easy story to read however I feel like there was no real STORY. It felt like I was reading a prologue to a story that never really kicked off.

The character of Harry was annoying, the way he was trying to be the “good cop gone rogue”. The only thing I did like about this book was the fact that it gave an insight into different cultures and the consequences of doing certain things in different cultures.

I don’t really have much to say about this book apart from the fact that it didn’t really give me much. I can’t really sum up what I read and I finished this a few days ago and had to almost read it again to jog my memory to write a review. It’s so sad as I thought I would really enjoy this as the blurb seems amazing.

Maybe at a later date I will pick up more of Dhand’s work as I would like to give it another go but for now I’m not a massive fan

Think I might read the series

I love these ‘Quick Reads’ and are often a basis for being introduced to new authors. I personally hadn’t heard of A.A. Dhand and his series featuring Detective Inspector Harry Virdee but after leaving me desperate, once I’d finished reading this short story to read more, I will certainly be looking to buy the rest in the series. I’d highly recommend “Darkness Rising” either as a prelude to the series if you’re a regular reader of this author or like me, as a titillating insight into a thrilling new series.

A brilliant pre-cursor to this wonderful crime series set in the dark underbelly of Bradford, and introducing one of contemporary crime fiction's most intriguing detectives.
