am filing this under “Books I didn’t expect to make me cry” 😭 The grip this story had on my heart. This story is about a young boy, Tiền, who is finding a way to come out to his Vietnamese parents and in the midst of that, we learn about their lives, heartbreaks, but most of all love for one another other. I love books that highlight navigating two cultures, countries, and languages.

What I loved:
-How the story line would change colors
-The friendships <3
-Tiền’a relationship with his mother
-the artwork!

beautiful. the art is so detailed and beautiful. it's so well made. the characters are endearing, though it can be hard to keep track of the side story characters. the plot was pretty well paced and the side stories correlate to the main story quite seamlessly. i also enjoyed the shift in colors when talking about different stories, red for main story, orange for past, and purple for fairytales.

Read this in one sitting after a really bad day. It made me cry with happiness - the illustrations are beautiful, the color palette is expressive and helps the reader keep track of what narrative they are following, the characters are sweet and gentle. I loved the author's note at the end - it's always interesting to me to learn about their artistic process and decision making. A really soothing and cathartic way to end a difficult day. I will definitely be reading this one again.
