DNF... I have never EVER done this before, but after spending the last week and a half stuck at 75 pages, and dreading picking it up, I'm throwing in the towel. I commend Lacy for speaking out about her horrifying experience, and I think she is incredibly brave; however, this book is simply not for me. This beginning portion is slowly drawn out with her explaining her mundane day to day activities as a student. Perhaps one day I will pick this book back up.

Book Review!!
Notes on a Silencing: A Memoir
by Lacy Crawford
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5
First off, I would like to thank @librofm for providing me with this audiobook through their ALC program. Hearing this story narrated by the author’s own voice provided an amazing perspective.
“First, they refused to believe me. Then they shamed me. Then they silenced me.”
I mourn for our world that this is the norm for sexual assault, power, privilege, and corruption in the places that should be protecting us the most. Lacy is a brave and amazing soul for sharing her story so candidly, and I believe it will provide an open door for those who need one.
This was a heartbreaking memoir, but do not doubt the importance of a writing such as this. This was absolutely riveting and eye opening, and it tore my heart and soul to pieces.
On occasion, I found myself a little confused due to the non-linear timeline, and I also occasionally felt more connected to the story when I picked up the physical book in comparison to listening to the audiobook.
This was such a deeply moving story that deserves more than ever to be told, and I cannot thank Crawford enough for having the strength and resilience to share it.

"First, they refused to believe me. Then they shamed me. Then they silenced me. On balance, if this is a girl's trajectory from dignity to disappearance, I say it is better to be a slut than to be silent. I believe, in fact, that the slur slut, carries within it, Trojan-horse style, silence as its true intent. That the opposite of slut is not virtue but voice."
Poignant, raw, and moving.

This makes me so furious that I can't think straight. The Episcopalians are just as bad as the Catholics when it comes to their handling of sexual abuse. Protect the institution at any cost. It's all about money and power and prestige. Use threats and humiliation to silence those who speak out. Deny and distort their stories. What's a few shattered lives when the reputations of the privileged are at stake?

This book is a reminder (as if we need one) that the patriarchy is alive and well. Lacy is the victim of a sexual assault as a 14 year old student at an elite boarding school. The story is not a new one - people in power covering up abuses against women to save powerful men - but it is an important one and one that must have been difficult to tell. Hoping for a future where victims are believed and perpetrators are held responsible.
