Doctor Who: The Writer's Tale - The Final Chapter by Russell T Davies and Benjamin Cook is the best book on writing that I have ever read. It's not just a bunch of stuff about formula and technique and different story structures that you can use, it's a series of emails written between them when he [Davies] was the Head Writer of Doctor Who - and this is over the course of several years, so what you really get is a real time stream from within a writer's mind. It's like a simulation of what being a writer is actually about. This should be be required reading for every writer or at least everyone who thinks themselves a writer and if you still want to be a writer by the time you've finished reading it then maybe you've passed the test and should do it.

This is really a great book! The format is refreshing. Will delve further into a proper review once I finshi it!
This is a tabletop book, with a really beautiful layout that makes it engaging. The mix of scripts, light banter and writing tips and experiences makes it a fun read. You do need to be a Who fan to enjoy this and having seen the series it relates to made it more enjoyable. Reading it slowly over a year, the amount of time it spans over, was quite nice. Well worth a read if you are a fan of Tennant era Dr Who.
I enjoyed seeing the possibilities of this series' episodes, the creativity and the downsides of the production. Also a plus of the book is that both men were quite funny.

What a wonderful read. A mammoth read, mind. I read this as part of my Doctor Who marathon, which has been going on for years now, but includes (on top of the show itself) back issues of Doctor Who Magazine, commentaries, podcasts, DW Confidential, spin offs (including the Australian one) and even fan made productions. I’m doing this comprehensive marathon once, so I can truly say I’ve watched and fully considered everything. As a result, I can only review this book as “that” kind of obsessive fan.
I love Russell T Davies with all my heart. He is my hero. No stranger has changed my life more than him. Ben Cook is a journalist who both in and outside of this book has contributed huge, fearless additions to fandom. We are so lucky to have him. Together they give an unbeatable insight into what it’s like to write Doctor Who, straight from the horse’s mouth. I felt the full gamut of emotions reading this, which is amazing considering it’s essentially just a bunch of emails. It proves the level of clarity and beauty in Russell’s writing that he could make magic out of what others would find an inherently limited format.
If you want to learn how to write, you’ll pick up handy tips. If you want to know how Russell made the show between 2007 to 2009, then this will unveil a serious number of delicious secrets. This is the full story.
