Lexi Lets Go

3.82 AVERAGE

3.75 / 5 (rounded down for Goodreads)

A quick, flirty read about an idyllic little town, magic, and finding love in unexpected places, Lexi Lets Go has some great parts that could pull a reader in.

LIKES
-Lexi stood out as a main character all her own. She has a great personality and confidence in herself as a fat woman. We need more fat-friendly fat representation out there. Her trauma is well articulated throughout the story, and I appreciate the vulnerability required in crafting her character.

-The sex-positive narrative made me happy. I would rate it maybe a 1.5 on the spice scale, but the focus on not airbrushing Lexi's body out of sex scenes made it clear how much the author cares about genuine romance rep for fat women.

-I liked the handling of James' bisexuality, and it wasn't used as a plot point or something that people fetishized. His sexual fluidity and orientation were treated with the utmost respect. That might be the "bare minimum," but I want to applaud the author's tact.

-It's apparent that Lexi's story is interconnected with previous stories and characters centered in Mystic Falls. However, this book never gets too in-depth with those stories and avoids confusing any potential readers who may have started the books out of order.

-One of my favorite tropes to exist is the celebrity x average person, so that happened to be one of the selling points. While I've never been a Harry Styles girl, the loose inspiration was clear and meaningful to the author.

DISLIKES
-There were times when the writing style clashed with me as a reader, specifically in some spaces. Those problem spots felt clunky and could've used an extra pair of eyes from an editor or secondary beta reader.

-Maybe I've been spoiled on slowburns, but this story seemingly falls into the insta love trap instead of defining a clear line between instant attraction and love. It's something a lot of Hallmark-style books experience, but it did take me out of my immersion.

-Additionally, the timeline of 2 weeks became my biggest gripe. While I am all for suspending disbelief and letting fiction be fun, I almost turned into Jacinda with skepticism about how quickly it all happened. In 2 weeks, I'm supposed to believe that a mega superstar is willing to settle down with a woman he met, buy property next to her, and confess his love. It's a bit of a stretch.

-There were times when I felt the chemistry missed the needed hoops. Often, these moments were more where the author told us how the characters felt instead of showing the connection through actions. I think some more unspoken actions can mitigate this problem.

-Finally, I was under the impression from the prologue and things I saw from the other books that magic would be involved in these love stories. However, that thread never fully came to fruition, in my view. Was the tarot reading supposed to be the magic connection because tarot is a bit more complex than "magic"?

Overall, it was a cute read, and I think it'll find a good audience. Thanks to the author Mary Warren for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

❤️✨ received an ARC copy✨❤️

This is hands down my favourite book Mary has written. Granted, I've only read two of her stories but this one is one hundred percent my fave!

I love Lexi. Lexi is a gal I get behind. Shes emotionally strong and puts everyone but herself first and it's not until Liam comes along and shows her that it's okay to lean on someone from time to time. To let yourself be taken care of, loved, and protected.

The writing, the growth for both Liam and Lexi was satisfying and the spice was great! I feel ✨seen✨ as a bigger girl and I love what Mary does for us big chicks; giving us leading spots in romance stories.
This story is an ode to the girls who have all their walls up and do so to protect themselves. People that know your worth will work their way into your lives for the better, and that's what Liam did for Lexi - all while dodging his ridiculous manager (we hate Jacinda here)
lighthearted slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

I really wanted to like this book. I read the whole thing hoping it would click for me, but I was just kinda bored. The MCs had no chemistry and they kept having the same conversation with themselves and each other over and over and over.

Thank you so much to Mary Warren for an advanced copy of this story!

Saw some Tiktok videos by Mary Warren promoting Lexi Lets Go and I knew I HAD to read this as a fat, die-hard Harry Styles fan to fantasize about what it might be like to let go and fall in love with a rockstar like Liam James. As a 1D fan, when I saw things like the name "Liam James" or descriptions of songs, it was exciting to know what that could be inspired by.

I enjoyed this story and some of the messages like taking rest, advocating for yourself, and sharing your "burdens" with folks so it's not kept inside.

Spoiler: I kept wondering about the magician tie and what conflict might pop up there (i.e., would there be an awareness that they were put under a love spell to test their relationship?). It felt cheesy at times but it was a fun and quick read. And while I'm not a fan of spice/smut, I can appreciate that Lexi's fat body was loved.

DNF @ 68%

I’m sorry this book just unfortunately wasn’t for me. It was very Insta-lovey, and if you know me, I cannot stand that trope, and it just felt a bit repetitive to me. Maybe a different book by this author would be better

okay this is the perfect book if you want a cute, short romance and if you love books with a fast pacing. the entire book is about a period of 2 weeks and then you have the epilogue 2 years later. honestly personally, i thought this book was okay. i’ve read better but i’ve also read worse.
things i loved:
- famous rockstar romance!!
- the representation of the plus size fmc and the way she loved her own body even though people made comments about her!!!!!
this i disliked:
- the speed of the whole story. the mmc literally said in their first date, i think two days after they met, that he wanted to sleep with her and thought the day after that he loved her. after two weeks they decided to build a house together? that’s just a little bit too fast for me.
- the way the fmc said multiple times “i can’t believe this is really happening.”

anyways like i said earlier, this book is perfect if you want a short cute lil story - 3,5/5 stars for me

Love all of these cute romances. Can't wait for more.

I didn’t know this book was a part of a series, though I don’t think I missed out on anything too important by not having read the others.

This story follows Lexi, a woman who runs a local inn. Liam, a famous singer, shows up one day because his bus broke down. They have an instant connection and start to explore each other.

This story was just fine. I did find myself cringing at some of the word choices for female anatomy, but overall mellow spice scenes. I liked Lexi coming into her own and realizing she deserves to be cared for too. I also liked Liam’s vulnerability. The fat rep is also pretty good in this book. Lexi takes no crap from anybody. I don’t love “insta love” so this story wast my favorite unfortunately, but it was a quick read for a Sunday afternoon!

Thank you to the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

This is the best ARC I have ever had the pleasure of reading. You can tell a lot of love and careful eye went into making it perfect from the start. This IS an instant love story. It’s happy, sweet, and cozy. It’s low drama and did not trigger my anxiety once, which was kind of a nice change. I usually don’t enjoy this genre/these tropes. I prefer grit, drama, and tension. Mary Warren might have changed my mind and made me a believer. Well done!

This book is soothing and familiar like chicken soup but not at all boring or ordinary. The MMC is a total cinnamon roll. I found the characters to be relatable and had depth despite the fast pace.

I also think this book is fat positivity done right! Fat was not the FMC whole personality and identity- fat was just something she had. No big deal. Although it came up, it didn’t feel like the entire focus. She wasn’t portrayed as some hideous monster that was unlovable and questioned her worth. I love Olivia Dade but I think May Warren handled fatness in an even better way and I enjoyed the portrayal more. I was never left feeling badly about myself or thinking about how negatively others must see me (a fat person.)

Although the scenarios in the book are clearly fictional and unrealistic- it felt understandable as to why these 2 were drawn to one another. Not to mention whirlwind romances do happen (I speak from experience and going 16yrs strong.)

As a side you don’t need to be a HS fan or fat to enjoy this book. It’s a cozy read that will appeal to anyone who loves sweet rockstars, towns like Stars Hollow, and oldest daughter (IYKYK- responsible, carry the weight of the world, etc) vibes. These 2 characters show how opposites can attract and balance one another’s lives and I think that’s really beautiful.

This book includes cute text messages (I enjoy those in a book.) There is also a playlist which I absolutely adore.

My only criticism is that everything aligned a little too perfectly (ex: his career changes and timing with Lexi) It made things feel a little too perfect, that paired with the instant love was a little sugary. I’d have enjoyed a longer timeline and a little bit of obstacles to overcome.

Thank You to the author for an e-ARC!

Lexi has been working nonstop since she was 15, but at least she is the manager of Mystic Falls Inn at 30. Liam is a 26-year-old pop superstar, feeling uninspired lately until he breaks down in Mystic Falls and starts interacting with Lexi. There is chemistry between Lexi and Liam at first glance, and they must explore that regardless of what anyone says. And during their exploration, they find they might want this feeling forever. I also want to point out that Lexi is older than Liam by 4 years, which is significant she is older because that is not something I see all the time. If you enjoyed Book 2 about Poppy and Josh, they make a couple of appearances in the book for their food skills and because Josh is Lexi’s brother.

Quotes I like enough to highlight:
“This card is a renewed sense of energy. You will find your north star, and you will steer your own ship with renewed energy.”
“But making life changes in your thirties is much easier said than done.”
