I read online that the 4th and 5th book were originally one book and they were split for page count. I can see that after reading both books. The 4th book suffers more but this book (the 5th) is a return to form. 4 stars because I still find myself struggling with the long action sequences.

I don’t even know what to SAY. Hadrian warned us - he warned us!! - the suffering would only get worse and while I worried, feared, that it could only mean this inevitable end…oh my heart. I thought at this point there was nothing left to be torn out.
This series. What even is left to say? It’s bone-shakingly brilliant. So brilliant it makes my teeth ache and brain hurt and soul weep. It makes me want to throw up and scream and cry and hug these books to my chest and then throw them at everyone just randomly in the street and say READ THESE NOW IT’LL BE THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE and if they responded they’d rather jump into traffic at least we could all agree well, that would probably hurt less.
Are you a fan of the chosen one trope? It feels like a disservice to refer to this as something so common but also what else can you call it when it feels like the truest iteration of that trope even while being something entirely new. It’s simply so THOROUGH in its exploration of what it truly means to be a “chosen one” and the weight it carries. Without ever leaning on something so plain as a “trope” to propel the plot - no, it’s the reader that supplies that designation, if they would like.

Even though I could see what the climax of this book was going to be from pretty much the very beginning of the book, Ruocchio does such a fantastic job at writing it - and the rest of the story - that I was still completetly engrossed and overflowing with emotions by the time I actually read it.
