This was very clearly meant to be part of Kingdoms of Death, but that would have been much to long a book and so it was split into 2. It takes place immediately after book 4 and takes the ruin of a man that Hadrian was, builds him back up to be whole again but still scared beyond repair, and then ruins him again. He will never be the indomitable Halfmortal again. The centuries are taking their toll and that past has destroyed him. I did find this the most predictable entry yet (I knew how it would end very early on) and probably the 2nd weakest in the series (2nd to book 1). That being said, it was still a very enjoyable read.
