This book was lovely, it took me awhile but I can see why it was a good book and all. I really liked France and I appreciate how the other characters are focused in here as well. Of course there are parts where I would dislike this happening to a child but those are different times.

one of my favourite books ever, I read when I was young and I felt such a connection the the MC, the way she viewed the world and ger parents was very similar to mine and it helped me to examine those relationships (especially my relationship with my mum)
very good read 100% recommend

Would definitely recommend reading with a critical eye. There are racist tropes shared throughout the text, but clearly as part of the perspective of a white young woman raised by white immigrants in the early 1900s. The story is still interesting and well-written, and I enjoyed reading it immensely.
