A broad and sweeping history which is fantastic for both an entry level introduction to the umbrella term of Asian American history, as well as being a great resource for those with some knowledge already. This was such a well researched book, and Lee also provides some of the most thoughtful context and examination of this wide history and into the contemporary.

Breadth but lacks depth. Frequently felt like a regurgitation of numbers and statistics. The wide range of the subject meant that immigration had to be dealt with in sweeping generalizations and no nuance was conveyed at all.

A clear and nuanced overview of the various Asian populations who have immigrated to the USA.

I did not know how ignorant I was of my own history until I read this book, and I am so glad I did. Previously I had downplayed that part of me to fit in. No longer. I am proud of my heritage and proud of my parents who made their way here. This is a must read for Asian Americans and those who want to learn about the immigrant experience.

A detailed book exploring Asian American history, guiding how certain ethnic groups within Asia had developed during times of exclusion and discrimination by law and by immigration. I thought the author connected all aspects wonderfully, marking a clear path from the beginning colonial times up to present day. I definitely recommend reading this book considering Asian Americans are seen to be rather invisible in history books.

This is a must read for anyone who wants a greater understanding to a very complex history of Asian American immigration. Dense and well researched, this gives a great overview of historic and current immigration issues.
