While there are sections of the plot that seem overly long and unnecessary, overall I really enjoyed the story. One aspect that really stood out to me was the horror aspect to the mysterious inhabitant of the house. All though the mystery had previously been spoiled when I watched a tv adaptation, I was surprised that Bronte was still able to send chills down my spine with the way she wrote in that creepy aspect of the story.

Jane är en intressant karaktär, kul att läsa om hennes tankegångar eftersom hon är så vältalig och har så starka åsikter och tankar.

reread 5 / 5 — jane eyre by charlotte “i invented the sadgirl” brontë
okay so imagine being a tiny traumatized orphan in a drafty gothic mansion, falling in love with your emotionally constipated boss who may or may not have a wife locked in the attic, and somehow STILL choosing to love yourself first??? yeah. that’s jane.
she’s not quirky. she’s not chill. she is fueled entirely by righteous anger, god, and feminism before it had a hashtag. she says things like “i am no bird; and no net ensnares me: i am a free human being with an independent will” while staring directly into the abyss of patriarchy. mother was mothering in 1847.
and rochester?? that man is 85% unresolved trauma and 15% vibes. he’s brooding, he’s broken, he’s giving "do not perceive me." he tries to gaslight/gatekeep/gothic-manipulate her into marrying him while his legally alive wife is LITERALLY upstairs and jane goes “mmm no ❤️” and dips. ICON.
also there’s a ghost. a fire. a hearing-my-lover’s-voice-on-the-wind telepathically moment. god herself said, “let’s give this 19th century girlie some supernatural emotional depth.”
in conclusion !!
jane eyre is about loving fiercely, surviving loneliness, walking away from men when necessary, and serving face while doing it in victorian grayscale. this book feels like pacing in a nightgown with a candle, and whispering “i deserve more” to the moon.

3.5 ⭐️ because some of it absolutely dragged on. But Charlotte Brontë was clearly writing a woman ahead of her time and I dig it.
