I waffled between rating this two or three stars, but the third one would have been solely because I loved the setting and that was easily the best thing about the book. I didn't particularly like any of the characters, and my first thought upon reaching the end of it was "Okay, but what was the point?" There were a couple of storylines that picked up in the second half but eventually more or less fizzled out, and none of it felt very well connected. Overall, I was pretty underwhelmed beyond wishing I could walk into The Half Moon and people watch for an hour or two.

What a well written book! The mixture of plot and character was perfect. I could feel the emotions throughout the story as Mary Beth Keane wrote in such descriptive terms.

Malcom and Jess were people who I felt sorry for at times because of things that happened in their marriage but also was angry with at times for the same reason. This is a sad read as it goes deep into the family and the way that what draws two people together can also be the thing that drives a wedge. In addition to Malcom and Jess’ relationship, it also touches on relationships between parents and their kids, between friends and through work.

Overall it is a realistic, emotional read that even with the sadness has hope for the future.

I originally gave this four stars, but I'm changing it to three. I didn't initially write a review because I didn't know how I felt about the book. I love her style of writing. I would give her five starts for that aspect. But I don't think I enjoyed the story line in this novel. I wasn't really pulling for any of the characters. I don't know...at first I really liked it but the more it sat with me, I have changed my mind.

Walking People is still my favorite of her novels. And I will definitely read her next one.
