possibly the best audio i’ve listened to. granted i haven’t listened to many, but the narrator was truly born for voice acting, and the book itself was incredible. very creepy and engaging
my only critique is that the fletcher kale subplot was completely unnecessary and added nothing to the story line. would’ve been better without it, and a shorter read. but besides that it was so good it still gets 5 stars, which is rare for me !!

I wanted to be scared! I do! I really, really do!
I think the last time a book scared me was when I read IT (Yes, I mentioned a King book in a review of a Koontz book. Wanna fight about it?) as an 8 year old. I continue to read books labeled as "horror" in hopes that they will scare me. (Yes, I am aware that Koontz does not wish to be labeled as a horror writer - but "you get what you get and you're happy with it.")
Phantoms was no different, as far as scaring me goes. In fact, I found it a little boring. The premise was a little intriguing, but the characters were boring and not at all relatable. I also wasn't a big fan of the ending. A honeymoon ending? Really?
Maybe the problem isn't with horror writers at all, maybe it's with me. Maybe I expect to much. Maybe the logical side of my brain won't let me even pretend to be scared for a moment.
...Or, maybe, this book just wasn't all that freaking scary.

I understood my dislike of this book more when I read the afterward. I was thinking it did not feel like other Dean Koontz books... and in the afterward he said he was told to write a horror novel, instead of his usual suspense thrillers. Not that I can't enjoy a good horror novel, but this just wasn't it.
I almost didn’t finish this book. Loved it until about three quarters of the way in when it just got plain WEIRD.
