I tried to get into this story, but couldn't. By page 50 the two sisters (what were their names?) arrived in Snowville only to find several people dead and the town silent while they meandered through the streets. What took 50 pages to tell could have taken half the amount of words to describe. In other words, it dragged on. And, if it dragged on in 50 pages, it will likely drag on for another 400 pages. Just didn't grab me.
It was a page turner til the last 5 pages! Hated how it ended! Ugh!
This was my first ever Dean Koontz read and I honestly had a blast with it. If you're like me and have yet to enter the Koontz-verse, this is a great introduction to his more paranormal-type works. It's a traditional monster thriller story, with the monster appearing, offing people, and then disappearing, playing with its victims to add suspense. It plays with an intriguing theory- what if disappearances like the Mary Celeste, the Roanoke colony and others were all connected and the responsibility of one type of Mesozoic aged monster that hibernates for years at a time and appears only once so often to feed? Add to that the fact the monster can shape-shift and mimic what it eats? You've got a terrifying land Jaws meets The Blob.
Fair warning, there is plenty of body gore here. It's not for the faint of heart. I'd place this title firmly in the 'horror' category.
One part didn't make sense to me and felt like filler: Fletcher Kale. Why was he included? A fringe character who barely interacts with the main cast, and not a single redeemable quality, not to mention everything he tasks himself to do adds nothing to the plot except a last minute tease- gasp suspense in the last 10 pages. Unnecessary.
The other characters provided a wide and interesting cast. Bryce, Jenny and Lisa were capable, intelligent and likable protagonists.
The story read quickly and I was never bored. I enjoyed myself throughout, and I highly recommend this to anyone who's looking for a good monster/suspense/horror/paranormal story, as long as you can handle the intense horror scenes.

4.5/5
This is the third book by Dean Koontz I've read and it was well worth the 8 months I took to get through it. I took a break somewhere around 13% of the way through and when I got back to it, it was extremely difficult to put down.
If there's one thing Dean Koontz does well it is most definitely atmosphere. I felt extremely creeped out at times, and it was the perfect thing to get me through the spooky season.
I could've done without the Fletcher Kale subplot. It didn't feel like it brought a lot to the table and honestly, the book should've ended sooner than it did. There was a clear point where we could've stopped, but it kept going for 20 or so more pages than it needed.

4.5 stars. I FUCKING LOVE DEAN KOONTZ. I don’t wanna cause any controversy but for me personally he is on par (if not better than

I liked it quite a bit. I read it because of that premise, and that premise was mostly enjoyable. The end sort of lost me, as things devolved into a climactic battle, but until then I had a good time.

I wanted a fun, spooky read. This definitely delivered. I did however felt like it took a turn in the middle and went in a different direction than I thought it would.
