"An ancient, awesome force has spirited away almost the entire population of Snowfield, a small town in California. The bodies of those remaining have been bizarrely disfigured. What hope can there be for the few people still alive?" (From Amazon)
A great thriller that had me on the edge of my seat! Loved it.

Jenny, a doctor in Snowfield, is traveling back to her home with her younger sister Lisa, but why are the streets so quiet?
The discovery of a body in her home is just the start of the strange things that are about to unfold for for both women as the night draws on.
This was a great book. It didn’t dilly dally at all with getting the ball rolling with the terror. The plot flows smoothly from the first page and keeps going with the momentum we love throughout.
It’s easy to see why Koontz is a big name in the book world as the amount of research that must have gone into this novel is astounding. There was just so much science, urban Legend and world history steeped into this one.
The characters were all pretty well built here and I approved of the decision making throughout…… Survival horror is something that often see’s unrealistic actions at times I find.
The gradual addition of new and frightening threats/information as we read really built the tension and danger well and it’s easy to see why it’s a fan favourite.
Not to be without gripes, I did find there was a whole murderer/biker gang subplot that didn’t really need to be here and that weighted down the flow a little at times.

The Solace: Oh! This was good and creepy. From start to finish, Koontz does a great job of making you feel completely creeped out. I remember taking my dog outside one night after reading this book and feeling this haunting feeling that something was coming for me - was it my anxiety, or was it the lingering of this book? Maybe both, but it's a sign of a spooky read.
The Dread: The ending was a bit on the nose for my liking.
Overall, this was a solid spookfest. I had no idea until a later conversation with my husband that this was also a bad and meme'd film with Ben Affleck. The book is worth it, but I'll let you know once I watch the film.

I find Dean Koontz is best read at-a-pace. I mean that I find parts of his novels tend to slow to a crawl a lot of the time. This didn't happen much, if at all in this novel, however, it did demonstrate one of my pet hates, namely that the all-powerful 'SCIENCE' takes on and not only beats the ancient evil life-form that professes to be none other than the devil himself in his various guises but then simply dismisses it as little more than a very old creature that somehow managed to survive millions of years due to it's abilities to be all but unstoppable. Unstoppable that is until the great god 'SCIENCE' comes along with it's super-powers and defeats it within hours(days at most).
No. This was a bit of a cop-out in my opinion. It was never completely proved that the creature was not actually a demon, but it was stated quite categorically several times and we were clearly meant to think that that was the case. All this does for me is suck all the mystery and potential horror out of the story and relegate it to the realms of the mundane. I like my horror to be a good deal more creepy and unknowable than simply 'SCIENCE has solved the mystery with it's super-powers'.
So this moved at a fair old pace, which was nice, but it seemed to delight in dismissing an ancient evil as nothing more than a creature that was lucky enough to have avoided 'SCIENCE' for the last few million years.
No idea why this is so highly rated amongst his fans. Of the few Dean Koontz I've read so far, this is the one I would have happily skipped over had I met a review like this one first.
I wouldn't bother if I were you, there are much better Dean Koontz novels to be read.

Hmm, another 'it'. Or, as mentioned in the book somewhere, a Lovecraftian nightmare. And what a nightmare it is.
A delicious one. Right from the start with Jenny returning to Snowfield, where everybody is either gone or dead. The small town atmosphere and omnipresent threat had me by the throat immediately. And it never let go after that.
Loved the monster stuff. How it operates, taunts and toys with its prey. Seriously tense at times as well. The underground scene with the fleeing animals for instance. Such a butt squeezer.
The storyline with the lunatic who murdered his family feels out of place though. A half-baked idea, shoehorned in, something like that. Should have been worked out properly or cut out entirely, I guess.
But enough complaining. This was tons of fun. Superego is simply unforgettable. Yup, gonna file this one as a favorite.
