The way Koontz wrote this book made me actually feel the suspense. I was surprised at how my heart raced by just reading a page. 5/5 stars because that was just amazing.

Many firsts with this book. Hadn't really read a horror/thriller before this book. It was a chilling experience and gripping till the end. Wouldn't be surprised if this is already a movie or going to be made into one. Going with 4 ⭐️s for this book. Look forward to reading more of Dean's books.

This was a nostalgic read for me. I read a decent amount of Koontz back in high school and I'm fairly certain I read Phantoms back then as well. So technically, this is a re-read even though I didn't remember much of the story.
This is a popcorn-munching-esque horror/thriller novel with a decently spooky tale. It plays out like a slasher film. Characters make some really "WTF?" decisions at times. And some of the events of the story don't make too much sense if you really think about it. But it flows well enough to be entertaining. I forgot about some of Koontz's word choice quirks, such as "sodium lights" and characters "gagging" frequently popping up.
It doesn't really matter, because this is a popcorn flick in novel form. And I ate it up. Sometimes 150 pages at a time. Koontz knows how to write an eerie atmosphere. And that's why I enjoyed the first half of the novel more than the second. The mystery and mounting uneasiness kept me hooked. But by the end of the book I sort of lost interest as the "killer" was revealed. I liked the goriness of the book, which helped keep me turning the pages. The characters are kinda flat and tropey, but they serve the story well enough.
Not a bad read, and alright for a creepy atmosphere. It was fun to revisit. I don't really feel the need to read anymore Koontz though. I got my fill.

The only other book by Koontz I’ve read is Intensity which, while not a great work of art, was admirable for how deeply intense it was. This book, on the other hand, took a very long time to get moving. Once the creature’s true form is seen, I found the book to be fairly thrilling, but it stumbles with an ending straight from a Harlequin romance. There are a number of missed opportunities to make this book really stand out - namely around paper thin main characters and Koontz having characters walk on stage simply to move the plot forward; much of the time Koontz seems a bit lazy in this department. I think I can say I “enjoyed” the book, but I doubt I will ever return to Koontz again.

A good read and interesting, but not more than 4*, more like 3.5*.
It definitely is not horror, more thriller-suspense.
