This was a journey!! I loved the plot, it was very interesting. I loved the characters. Not all of them, but most of them. Anyway, this was a cool story and it was fun reading all of the gory parts.
Graphic: Death, Gore, Violence, Blood, Medical content
The opening few chapters where the characters explore the mysteriously empty town are a little spooky, but beyond that I couldn’t get into this. It was incredibly bland and hokey. I’m really confused how Koontz managed to become such a big name in horror fiction. Say what you will about Stephen King, but at least he has a distinct voice.

Thank goodness I stuck with this one, because it was so worth it!
I found the beginning rough because of the insanely detailed writing and the very stereotypical characters. I loved the story though and the concept behind the Evil. I really didn’t like the side plot with the biker gang and Kale. It felt unnecessary and they had no impact on the ending.
Lots of great quotes from this one:
“Even decent people must occasionally choose between the lesser of two evils.”
“I thought you were my Matthew, but you were my Judas.”
Talk about a one liner
“When you come right down to it, maybe the only real devils are human beings; not all of us; not the species as a whole; just the ones who’re twisted, the ones who somehow never acquire empathy or compassion. If the shape-changer was the Satan of mythology, perhaps the Devil is only a reflection of the savagery and brutality of our own kind. Maybe what we’ve done is…create the devil in our own image.”
“There’s no use wasting energy being afraid of devils, demons, and things that go bump in the night…because, ultimately, we’ll never encounter anything more terrifying than the monsters among us. Hell is where we make it.”
