This was more complex than most historical mysteries I've read lately... the only thing is, I finished it last week and already I'm trying to remember what to say about it. I was very happy when the detective *finally* got a new pair of boots. I remember the minor characters well, but I'll be darned if I can remember what the crime was or why it was important. So I guess I would rate this one strong on characters and weak on plot. It took me a while to get through it, but it clearly was not a memorable read for me. I have the second in the series and I will try it out, but I wish I were looking forward to it more.

I wouldn't call this book so much a mysterh novel, rather it's a book about an English gentleman living his comfortable life in London with a side of mystery. I felt like a lot of information was left out until the solution was revealed, and then it was like "oh well, of course". The murder was solved and then there was still an hour of the audiobook left. It even started harping on some second mystery without really properly concluding. The ending just petered out instead of ending dramatically. Cozy but not a brain teaser.

This story introduces an endearing protagonist and nicely combines period atmosphere with a well-placed plot; in short, I'm impatient to catch up with this series. A pleasurable escape, not a guilty pleasure.

Typical Victorian mystery. Lots of entitled white men mucking about in everyone else’s business. Our hero is banished from the scene by the police, but manages to find those critical bits of insight.

It's a good mystery, just not my type.

A spin off of a Sherlock Holmes mystery. An enjoyable listen. I like the character Lennox and would be happy to read others in the series.

A really wonderful and full mystery novel! The characters are interesting and weave together in a realistic manner. There are all sorts of little nuggets of info to pick up with these old-fashioned detectives.
