Note: I received a digital review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
This book is reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes but the character seems more likeable and approachable. I think it would fit well into the 'Cozy mysteries' genre, although it is set in London and there is one scene where a character is beat up. A good book to snuggle up with a tea and enjoy.
Charles Finch is my new favorite mystery writer! Fascinating plot, accurate detail, believable characters. I loved it.
decent enough victorian-set mystery, featuring an idle lord (hello, whimsey, you are so much more dashing) who likes to play detective. which, no, is not particularly original, but the murder and solution at the center of the novel works well enough. that being said, hello, editor? please do more work. so wordy that it drove me insane. once again i gripe that just because you do a lot of research on a subject or know a lot of big words doesn't mean that you shove them all into your final manuscript.
If one hopes to write in the vein of Conan Doyle and Wodehouse, one should be very sure one can write well. This one did not.

This was more of a cozy mystery set in Victorian period. The tone is quite modern take and our amateur detective is from aristocrats. It is quite info dumpy but it would be best appreciated if visiting London or know it well.
Going into this blind is best because the synopsis is full of spoilers. If you can handle the red herrings, unwieldy sentence structure, this is easy to fly through.
I would continue this series at my leisure. Unfortunately I agree with most reviewers, this is average mystery. But I’m hoping it improves with time.
