Trying to find a new series; the mystery held my attention

It could be me but I had a really hard time following and getting excited about this book!

So pleasant! Reliably true to form and enjoyable. Friendly, warm characters, talk of tobacco ash and tea cakes... All you need in such a book, really.

While it obviously takes a bit (maybe too much) of inspiration from Sherlock Holmes, I think the first in this series was enjoyable and had a fun who-dun-it mystery.

Is it historically accurate? Definitely not. But as I am not a history buff so much as a mystery buff, I don't really care. If that sort of problem is an issue for you, then you may want to give this a pass.

It took a little while to get 'into' the story, but after a few chapters it came together. It was pleasant enough to check out the next in the series.

An enjoyable romp of a mystery. Finch does an admirable job in recreating Victorian London. As an aficionado of the era and the country I see little inconsistencies that no one else can see but they take nothing away from a well told story. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Makes me think I could have a career as a historical fact checker....then again, no one else would care about the little things I find so fascinating.

I couldn't get into this one. Too long and drawn out.

This was just a nice mystery to read. A little overburdened with detail and description, but it's the first in a series and it bodes well for titles to follow. I like that it is an old-fashioned who-dun-it with quirky characters and interesting story lines.

Interesting enough to keep me reading fairly late into the evening. I will definitely read the next in the series to see if the characters are further developed by the author. I could, however, have been quite happy with one less reminder that the main character liked to sit in front of his fire drinking tea and eating toast.

Book was fine, just wasn't feeling it.
