The premise is fantastic. I loved the ocean. That ended up being the only part I loved.
Kelvin was a miserable person right from the start and his stated background didn't align with any of his demonstrated skills. There is never an explanation as to why a psychologist was being sent to Solaris or what he was intended to do there. And I guess we just accept that he would have great facility with complex physics and formulae, without any serious background in the "hard" sciences?
I was disappointed in the author's imagination when it came to tech (although the imagination for the ocean really was wonderful.) Ray Bradbury who published Fahrenheit 451 nearly a decade earlier imagined screens the size of walls! Lem thought that space faring humans would still be using microfilm. (He did imagine video calls, so that's something.)
Further more, there was no role for women that wasn't being a partner or playmate. All of the scientists, past or present, were male. All of the astronauts or explorers mentioned, male. All of the officials at the institute, male. In 1961 Heinlein managed to see a future where women would be scientists of equal calibre to men, so it's not asking too much that Lem (also in 1961) could also have seen something similar.

Minor: Suicide, Suicide attempt
