A really interesting premise and some wonderfully flawed characters. Somehow the outdated technology descriptions seem to work.
It just gets caught up in way too much lore building.

“I hoped for nothing. And yet I lived in expectation.”

This is the favourite book of a mate of mine. Although I am not very fond of the sci-fi as a literary genre, I decided to give it a chance.
At first I was quite disoriented, but as you start to understand the story, it gets so much better.
I loved the character of Rheya and how human she acted and felt, despite "everything" she was.
The amount of details is incredible. I still have so many unanswered questions, but I really appreciated the final. I can't wait to discuss it with my mate

I loved the concepts in this book. The inconclusive ending kind of adds to it for me, I am still not really sure what actually happened here, but for once I'm not mad because the story is so character focused. The interminable library research sequences did derail me a bit and I ended up  glazing over the very in-depth descriptions of the history of the Solarists. It was interesting to me that the author extrapolated science to gravity manipulation technology and gavity-waves-as-a-medium communications, but also writes of magnetic tape as a data storage device, the valves of a comms device heating up, paper print-outs as a means of interfacing with a computer, and writes a space base in which there is an extensive paper-format library. I had to check when it was originally published to get my bearings. No shade from me, just an observation on how much the world can change in a short space of time.
slow-paced

I absolutely hated this book, it's literally just 200 pages of scientific yapping :')

However, these passages definitely made me feel something:

I shall find new interests and occupations; and I shall not give myself completely to them, as I shall never again give myself completely to anything or anybody.

We all know that we are material creatures, subject to the laws of physiology and physics, and not even the power of all our feelings combined can defeat those laws. All we can do is detest them. The age-old faith of lovers and poets in the power of love, stronger than death, that 'finis vitae sed non amoris', is a lie

I did not know what achievements, what mockery, even what tortures still awaited me. I knew nothing, and I persisted in the faith that the time of cruel miracles was not past

as it is translated, some parts sound a tiny bit clunky. overall the book is a nice complex bundle of science fiction.

I love it when authors let aliens be aliens. Incredible cinematic imagery, but it lacked heart. I didn't believe the love that grew enough for him to stay as he did, which makes me feel like I'm missing something from the narrative. I guess I'll read the spark notes later. (Also he didn't have to be racist)

Anyway, Roadside Picnic was way better.
