I’ve come to realize that Ali Hazelwood is for sure my comfort author. Her books, even though I KNOW they’re bad accourding to some standards, just make me feel so… good, like I actually lose myself while reading, I love it. And I’m not sure they even count as “bad” because she clearly makes everything in the story revolve around the message she wants to send out, so she INTENTIONALLY makes it a whole joke (but when it’s serious, it’s serious). I don’t think that makes sense, but for me it does. I mean, she is absurde, and she knows it, but she does it on purpose. That’s her ultimate plot device, absurdity. And this woman has the most wholesome, stupidest and funniest humor ever, I won’t tolerate any other opinion on this.

Science writing is terrible - she doesn’t know anything about neuroscience. Also the main character is cringe in a millennial way. The plot twist in the middle made me laugh out loud. Wouldn’t read again- but like this was not good

I read this book in a single sitting.

Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood just came out on August 23rd, but I’ve been looking forward to it since I read #TheLoveHypothesis back in MAY. And it did not disappoint!

Bee is a neuroscientist with the NIH studying brain stimulation. She’s just earned a spot leading a team on an elite NASA project to help astronauts perform better in space.

Then she finds out she’s not the only lead on the project. She’ll be working with NASA engineer, Levi, aka her grad school nemesis.

And of course, the best way to re-meet your nemesis is when they save you from being crushed by falling equipment and you proceed to faint in their arms, right?

And it all seems great until the first day on the project and none of Bee’s equipment has been delivered and then keeps not being delivered… and then turns out it’s been cancelled?

Now what’s a brilliant, purple haired scientist to do when it looks like grad school rivalries haven’t played themselves out and her project co-lead is trying to edge her out of a career making project?

She follows in the footsteps of her role model Marie Curie of course! (Well, minus the unshielded polonium.)

She doesn’t let politics or misogyny get in the way and is determined to make the project a success. Much easier once she and Levi come to an understanding in order to work together professionally.

As is part of Hazelwood’s writing style, this book is a fabulous rivals to lovers story featuring women in STEM with a feminist leading man. The kind of man that makes you wish there were more like him in the world. Men who recognize the privilege they have and use it to help bring up others who don’t have the same privilege. I mean, THE DREAM, #amiright?

What I’m getting at is basically, go get yourself a copy, a beverage of choice, and settle in for an excellent read.

I liked this one better than The Love Hypothesis, the characters felt more fleshed out and she did a much better job of explaining why Levi had been a jerk without excusing the behaviour or harm done. Particually as he really demonstrated the work he'd done to get better at communicating and avoid future misunderstandings.

BLESS THIS MESS- I have ranted to 4 people about this book. I started ranting one hour into listening to this book. I DNFd at 40%. (I therefore have no knowledge of the steamy scenes. Other one star reviews of those scenes are quite amusing to read, fyi😂)

It’s the same vibe as The Love Hypothesis, only without fake dating to keep my interest. And by same vibe- single POV, giant 6’4”dude pining away for tiny woman for years, STEM heroine who’s SO SMART and yet A COLOSSAL IDIOT ABOUT READING A MAN. And Levi gave more clues than Adam. He was OBVIOUSLY nice and helpful (amendment: obviously nice and helpful after he got his head out of his ass because apparently in grad school he was so overcome by his feelings he couldn’t be in the same room with her or find the ability to make polite conversation 🤦🏻‍♀️).

I should have made a drinking game out of the GAZILLION times Bee said, to his face and in her inner monologues, that he hated her AFTER he explained he did NOT. FFS- take the man at his word but also, his ACTIONS BACKED UP HIS WORDS!

PLEASE GIVE ME A STEM HEROINE WHO IS BOTH SMART AND CAN READ A ROOM, or at least her man. Or- indeed just understand the English language when the MMC says he doesn’t hate you. She is supposedly the best neuroscientist for the job, but cannot believe Levi when he says he doesn’t hate her. Holds past misunderstood actions against him in the face of mounting evidence HE IS A NICE DUDE. Who, by the way, keeps saving your sorry ass. (QUESTION- WHY MUST THE GUY KEEP SAVING HER? I’m aware the patriarchy is strong in academia and women have tremendous uphill battles. Why couldn’t Levi be the good ally but Bee have asserted herself more and saved her own damn ass???!!!!!)

Enough with smart heroines having to always be “quirky” and socially inept. ENOUGH!! Fun fact, a woman can be BOTH academically gifted AND socially functional.

While I’m on my soapbox screaming into the void, BE DONE WITH THE MISCOMMUNICATION TROPE. It was THE WHOLE DAMN BOOK. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 What’s that saying, “When you assume things, you make an ass out of me and you?” Yeah- that’s the actual trope in this book🙄🤦🏻‍♀️✋🏻.

For the love of all that is holy- BAN SINGLE POV. JUST NO MORE. This had the tiny twist of a bit of a You’ve Got Mail vibe except make it Twitter DMs. So we got a little of Levi’s POV.

The sister was fine- but, why are they twins and the sister speaks with an accent but Bee doesn’t?😂

I wanted more from this. Specifically, something different than The Love Hypothesis- and more than just that TLH was fake dating and this isn’t.

And I originally shelved this as DNF but I moved it to my Read shelf because I gave this thing over 6 hours of my listening life that I cannot get back, so I want credit on my reading goal.
