When Toma's little sister is kidnapped, she will do anything to find her and bring her home. Along the way she meets the disposed Tsar, an outsider with magic and who she really is.

I liked this book. The audio version was excellent. There were lots of unfamiliar terms but the glossary in the back was excellent. I really loved all the creatures and their portrayal.

I was happy with the ending because with everything going on there is no possible way to tie everything up. But the main problem of Toma and Galina was resolved. However there is a possibility for a sequel or if this is a standalone, an epilogue would have been perfect.

An interesting story that draws from Slavic folklore. It's pretty standard quest fantasy with an overly-powered protagonist, but the universe is interesting enough to give it a pass.

I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley.

The moment Mikhail finally met his soldiers, they reconized him at once and were already fighting for him. And yet he couldnt go to them immediately? Made no sense. The whole story was about these three people chasing through a world torn apart, to kill the bad guy and get the sister back. But instead of blundering around making silly mistakes, going on dates and working as a nurse, the whole thing could have been avoided if Mihkail had made rejoining hus forces his top priority. As for the book itself, i had 2 pages repeating in the beginning and 2 pages simply missing from the end. Who knows if maybe the two missing pages would make it make sense to me but now I will never know and honestly its a disgrace to not make sure the book has the correct number of pages in the correct order. The only saving grace was Vanyas quick banter but when he turned into a corpse too, as the love interest of the main character it just became too much.
