This was a reread and it was just as good, if not better, than the first time I read it in 2017. I rooted for every character, wanted justice served, and cried when their hearts broke. If you need a literary fiction to make you feel all the feels, then this is the book is you need.

a beautifully written story that handles a lot of heavy topics with an incredible amount of nuance and care. the characters were incredibly well developed, and the multiple POVs really aided in the complex portrayal of the human experience.

I can’t give this five stars because as much as I adored it, it simply cannot be put on the same level as haine
of the masterpieces I’ve read this year — I bestow upon it a 4.5 that is in my heart and soul a 5.

This was a spectacular read. I didn’t expect to come away from this book so heartbroken yet wanting more, I think Fredrick Backman is an amazing writer and this book proves it as the characters and the writing was superb.

This was not at all what I expected it to be. It was honestly really triggering and difficult to read at points because I feel he does such a good job of capturing the thoughts and feelings that this cast of characters would have after the r@pe. I thought it was handled beautifully, with so much care yet realistically brutal. His POV switching kept the book moving and me guessing what would happen and also created a vignette of this small hockey town. I’m shocked a male author could handle this topic in a way that felt so respectful of the realities of it, especially the terror. The characters were very nuanced; I in particular really enjoyed Bobos arc, seeing the women in the town stand up, and the small acts of bravery from Benji and Amat and other towns people.

I have no idea how to describe it, but Fredrik Backman's writing so perfectly encapsulates the mundane. Every character has a life, thoughts, emotions. I have never seen a book with a world that feels so perfectly imperfect and so perfectly human.
I like the way he writes like its a recollection of a past. Most books do, but Backman always adds "a few years from now she will look back at this moment" and it's such a good detail.

I wanna note that there were times that this book just completely hit me right in the chest to the point where I cried. The way he writes the ins and outs of different types of relationships is so beautiful.

This book is why I read. The characters are flawed but so human that they carve a place in your heart. I never thought I would care about a fictional hockey team. I legit sobbed through the last 50% of this book. I am so emotionally invested in this team and my boys…especially Benji. Benji may be my favorite fictional character ever. The writing style is unique and will keep you engaged because you get pieces of everyone’s thoughts even unnamed characters. It’s just brilliant. The hard topics are handled with such respect and tact that I was honestly impressed. My friend said it best, there is a you before Beartown and a you after Beartown.
