I’ve never truly understood what a “character driven” book was until I read this.

The first half of this book is very slow and almost nothing happens in the plot. In these pages, Backman does an excellent job at creating a large and unique cast characters, all of whom have flaws, and many of whom I was rooting for regardless. I have never felt like I understood characters as deeply as I did the ones in Beartown.

The second half of the book seems to move much faster and felt like a mystery/thriller. I was constantly trying to predict what was going to happen (and never did). Backman continues to build more and more personality into every character, and in doing so handles a very difficult and important (and potentially triggering, so beware) topic with grace.

As I finished this book, it took everything in me not to throw it across the room out of frustration and relief. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect ending. I loved it and cannot wait to dive into the next one.

I finished Beartown by Fredrik Backman a couple days ago and I'm still having such a book hangover.  This is one of the best books I've read in recent years.  Backman's puts in words many aspects of human nature and the human condition, in such a way that is so true, empathetic, witty, and sharp, I would read a passage and then pause, take my eyes off the page to let it reverberate, and then go back and read it over again.  The character development, and development of the character of the town itself, is thorough but reads and builds effortlessly.  He writes about trauma and heavy topics, but without a heavy hand -- rather with a deft touch and with care.  Can't recommend enough.  All the stars!
