I ended up loving this book! It did take me a long time to get into it, but once I did, it was great!

Meandering and somewhat frustrating in narrative structure. But the characters are believable and down to earth. The interactions between the two protagonists will be familiar to many readers. They are unsure of themselves, doubtful of their instincts, and plagued by stiff British cultural norms.

This is my first experience with Thomas Hardy, and the man loves his pastoral descriptions. One of the perks of adulthood and reading for pleasure, though, is the ability to skip whatever passages I want, guilt-free. So I did. Tucked inside the paragraphs of lengthy description I found a surprisingly fast-moving plot about Bathsheba Everdeen and her three (!) suitors. Each is so different and could offer her different things; we watch her try to figure out her own mind and whether she even wants to marry at all. The course doesn't run smooth, and at times you want to smack her for not seeing who the right choice obviously is. But the ending is hard-earned by the characters and comes to a rewarding and sweet conclusion. Liked it.

5 star, amazing, incredible, exactly what I needed, took me forever, but that’s what I needed for a book like this. Basically the first love quadrangle to ever happen in my opinion, and honestly one of the best. The metaphors in this are incredible, I mean actually stunning, my jaw dropped and…well, I don’t know what I felt, it was just so good time after time. There is a part where gargoyles are described for 2 pages, yet I was INVESTED. Anyways, top book of the year so far
