Pretty Average

The posts that follow death are amazing, the other characters are dull. It was pretty funny in some points. The plot is all over the place in some parts.

The DEATH plotlines are my favorite. This book has some of my favorite pratchett scenes yet.

Not as captivating as mort. The split narrative felt like there wasn't enough for one book from death along so the other story came along for a ride when it didn't really have much to do with the main story

Discworld is a never-ending gift, always something new on a reread and there are so many books to begin with. I'm trying to work through in overall order, disregarding the small threads and arcs. This is #11 overall and #2 in the Death series.

Death is fired by the Auditors, who say that a new Death will be born/arise out of necessity. In the meantime, there is no one to deal with the build up of life force released when anything dies, nothing helps them shake off the old mortal coil and pass on. The wizard Windle Poons slips back into his body and becomes undead, animating himself through force of will.

Like most Death books, this is all about the ways of living. Death has some sweet normal experiences with an elderly lady and her townfolk when he works as a hired hand. An undead society campaigns for rights, and life force builds up trying to create a city. As always, the satire is strong and subtle and profound and hilarious. The characters are loveable or at least relatable, and everything is clever. A joy to read and I'm going to try for 5 or so more this year. This is one of a very few series I would like to eventually purchase in full with nice physical copies.
