Man, where to begin? This book was awesome. I had zero expectations when I went into this book-- and now, coming out the other side, I can't wait to read more from Bird! He writes relationship dynamics really well, especially dialogue. Everything felt believable to me and real. This a father and son story, and although I am not a father nor am I a son, I could relate to both characters in many ways. I loved the fact that we went into different characters heads and didn't stay in Mikes the whole time. I really enjoyed Doug's chapters. The last 70ish pages were my favorite and I flew through them, needing to know what happened. Definitely reminiscent of King, although I appreciate the fact that Bird never wanders in his writing, everything is a piece to the final puzzle. The ending ties everything together in a neat bow. Highly recommend!

Thank you Hamelin for sending me your book for my honest review.

Double Vision is a great character based story. Hamelin does an excellent job of fleshing out our main characters and bringing them to life. They are believable in every way. From the conversations they have and the actions they take. I was brought in immediately into their world and I cared about their fate. The drama with Michael and his fight with alcoholism and trying to connect with his teenage son is incredible writing. My only wish was that there was more of the supernatural elements woven through the story. I look forward to reading more from this author.

I want to thank the author of this book for gifting me with a copy!

This book is a detective story with some supernatural elements thrown in. The story also explores family relationships, addiction, and fatherhood. A strong and slow burn. I enjoyed this book a lot. Very well written, and set the scene perfectly. I enjoyed the character of Mike Lunsmann, as imperfect as he was. I wish it was a bit longer, as I enjoyed the historical aspects and backstory of the Jessup’s farmhouse.

"Forgiveness is not enough."

Former detective Michael Lunsmann is about to lose everything: still in love with his ex-wife and estranged from his 15 year old son Doug, he's again drunk and about to hit rock bottom. One day he wakes from a drinking binge with a bullet in his arm and no idea how it got there. During the same night, four teens go missing. Drawn into the investigation, Lunsmann launches an effort to catch the killer, but first he needs to face his own demons...

Where do I even begin?! This book was so much fun!
When Hamelin Bird contacted me a couple of months ago, asking if I was interested in reading his debut novel, I really didn't expect to find such a well written story! Double Vision is a supernatural mystery novel with a special focus on the relationship between Lunsmann and his son. Both characters are so well described and their dialogues and reactions felt real and believable. The minor characters are also brilliantly drawn, so it's very easy for the reader to be completely absorbed by the dynamics between them and the plot.

The story is interesting and easy to follow, not necessarily super original but I really didn't mind that. I want a book that keeps me guessing and glued to the pages, and Double Vision is exactly that. I enjoyed every single chapter because this novel is beautifully written, with a fresh style, sometimes almost poetic. Some elements and phrasings reminded me of Stephen King, one of my favorite authors, but Hamelin Bird definitely has his own voice.

And this is a debut novel... wow, what an amazing start!
Can't wait to read more of Bird's stories in the future!
Super recommended! 5 stars.
