I suspected the twist early on but I think it was an interesting well told story that kept you engaged in what would happen next.

Sigh. Had this one figured out before I hit the halfway mark. And Burke's insistence on repeatedly having her heroine beat herself up for past relationship mistakes is wearisome.

I figured the twist out long before it was revealed, so that did temper my enjoyment. However, I still thought this was a good read. It kept my interest and I thought Burke did a good job of weaving Olivia's past with her present. Her history with Jack felt real and complicated, and I found the writing about the psychology of it compelling.

The Ex by Alafair Burke is the story of Olivia Randall, a forty something old criminal defense lawyer who is recruited to help her ex, Jack Harris after she receives a desperate call by his sixteen-year-old daughter Buckley. Jack is accused of killing three people of one is rich millionaire Malcolm Nealy whose son killed Jack's wife and a few others before killing himself . Jack holds Malcom responsible for not getting his son the help he needed . Jack's defense is weal and Olivia jumps in to help him as she is ridden with guilt over her breakup with Jack and feels responsible destroying his life when they were younger.
For me it was on ok read not too good not too bad as the end was very predictable and didn't answer a lot of questions .The backstory between Jack and Olivia was interesting and the book had a lot of potential but left me hanging in the end .

Ohh I love a good plot twist! I didn't see that one coming at all! I really enjoyed reading this one. It wasn't exactly a page turner and had some slower points but overall it was very exciting.

I did enjoy me questioning if he was guilty, but I wasn’t a big fan of the ending.
