I was wary that this would present the "good people on both sides" trope or whitewash history. It did neither.

Someone else reviewing this book said it was one of those books you had to put down to stare in the distance and absorb what you’d read. They were absolutely correct. This book is absolutely critical to read in this time and tells a story that must be heard, without exploiting those who tell it. Utterly poignent, a must-read

An amalgamation of vignettes that are supposed to contribute to the bigger picture of this novelization of the true story of how Rami Elhanan and Bassam Aramin were united by the grief each felt after losing a child in events that were seen as casualties in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine.

While this is definitely a timely read, readers may find that the book meanders too much nd this will definitely detract from appreciating the tale. McCann is a magnificent writer and each detour is poetic and beautiful, but not all the dots are connected in the end and this is to the book's detriment.
