I've never read anything quite like this before. Ernaux finds a way to write a memoir in which she keeps herself at a distance (for better or worse) and fits herself into the tapestry of the history surrounding her lifetime. I found it fascinating to experience a chunk of history in this way.

I also found a few observations to be helpful in thinking about the world we inhabit now versus the world as it used to be. Chiefly, Ernaux observes that we have increasingly come to build our identities around who we are (ethnicity, gender, sexual preference, etc.) rather than what we do. I think that's correct as an observation of our time and culture. But I also think it has become one of the issues that is making it hard to build coalitions to take on the real villains in our culture (ie. the rich). Forcing us to define ourselves by our innate differences has divided us. No solutions here, but recognizing the problem is perhaps the most important first step.

So good it almost made me like the Fr*nch

unlike anything i have ever read or ever will. one of those books that is reflected in every aspect of every day life. Can't wait to read everything else from Annie Ernaux
