Join Ji-won as she navigates the tricky world of the emerging cannibal. There is a lot of buildup before we go there, but what a payoff. Loved the super-short chapters, the various relationships between characters, the insight into Korean (and Korean-American) family dynamics, and in the end, Ji-won’s coup de grâce is really satisfying.  This is not for everyone; there is graphic body horror involved.

the messages got a little heavy handed for me, like i didn't feel that it was necessary to have the feminist overtones spelled out so frequently and blatantly. i would rather have just drawn my own conclusions for ji-won's motivations bc they were pretty clear to begin with. BUT, all that being said, i thought it was a fun thriller with a fun killer protagonist to root for, and the heavy handedness of it made sense in that context. like yeah i'll root for the traumatized man killer, she deserves a little treat.

I loved the audio version of this book. I tried to read the print copy and couldn’t seem to get into it, so I’m glad I gave the audio copy a chance. I loved the descriptions, concise but still impactful. The narrator was great. Love it.

So I thought this was supposed to be a nice “support women’s wrongs”/“good for her” book, but holy shit she’s just a psychopath. This isn’t even a proper revenge taken too far kind of thing.
She literally murders a guy she finds mugged in an alley? A kind of racist nice guy at school is framed for 4 murders? I feel like she could have just gotten him kicked out of school? She has no remorse for her friends? And then you find out about the tumor and you think that’s why she’s crazy and THEN SHE GOES BACK TO MURDERING. Jesus. Also George sucks and is gross, but isn’t a rapist or abusive or anything? Like just ruin his life. Don’t take it.

This book had a very slow start, but the final third made it worth the read. While I understand the need for character development, the first two-thirds dragged a bit too much for my taste. That said, I really appreciated the Korean American perspective and the main character’s internal conflict regarding her cravings—it added a unique and compelling layer to the story. I just wish the action had kicked in sooner because once it did, I was fully invested.

A quick read, very tense. Shirt chapters which allowed for easy stopping points, this was definitely a book you may need to put down and come back to when it gets too uncomfortable.
