I got a lot of enjoyment out of this book. The first 75% or so of the book are pretty solid, but I did have some problems with the ending.

I enjoyed the narrative style of this book. The main character, Ji-won, narrates the whole story in first person, and throughout she gives a lot of insight into her family's past and their habits. The characters all have their own flaws and generally feel like well feshed out people. Ji-won herself is deeply flawed herself and makes a lot decisions based on questionable morals.

Ji-won and her sister are children of Korean immigrants living in the US and a lot of the themes revolve around the difficulties that come with being diaspora, parents that don't really speak the language, fetishization of Asians etc.

The men in this novel are all awful people, which is another main theme of this book. I get where the author is coming from, because there definitely are a lot of awful guys out there, but I would have preferred it to be a bit more nuanced.

The start of this novel feels more like a contemporary drama in which we watch Ji-won's family unravel, but then it veers more into horror territory as Ji-won starts to become obsessed with the thought of eating human eyes.

The ending I found a bit of a letdown. I was expecting a bit more suspense, and the characters were a little too stupid about all the events going on for my liking, just blindly following the narrative without questioning things that should have been obviously off about the situation.

Despite that it was overall a fun read!
