The book had an interesting concept but unfortunately took more than half the book to actually get to it. The pacing made it hard to get into the story, and the writing was filled with extraneous descriptions that did nothing to add to the atmosphere or setting. I really enjoyed maybe the last quarter of the book, when the action finally started. It's just a shame it took so long to reach that point.
Not as good as the "Straw Men" trilogy, but I just love the way this bloke puts words together and does character development.
Kept my interest to the end - good book. Not five stars because it didn't answer all of my questions and I'm not sure that the final page wrap up satisfied me.

Such a creepy book - whenever I think about it, I'm compelled to read it again, even though it scares me every time.

This one was quite good.
Michael Marshall (Smith) is one of my favourite story tellers. Not only does he have a fertile imagination, but his prose and dialogue are darn near perfect. And no matter how serious in nature the story may be, he can also make you laugh out loud with his dry wit.
The Intruders is best read without knowing anything about it. For most of the novel, you have no idea where it is all going to lead to. That's the fun of it. I was quite satisfied with the resolution of it all (even though it was slightly spoiled for me), and I recommend this and anything else he's written.
Still not as good as [b:Only Forward|920395|Only Forward|Michael Marshall Smith|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1333726911s/920395.jpg|123899], but not much is.

This is the 2nd book by Michael Marshall (Smith) that I've read, the 1st being the Science Fiction book, Spares. I must say I was not as impressed with this one as I didn't feel like it really succeeded as suspense/thriller. The ending was a little bit too diffuse for me; I wasn't satisfied with it at all. Of course since this is a new, there may be a sequel on the way, but if that is the case, it failed the "stands on it's own" test. The premise is fascinating, and the writing very good; it's just that the whole doesn't seem to even equal the sum of the parts. But it wasn't bad enough that I won't try reading more books by this author.
I loved this story, but it may not be for everyone. First, I am a huge fan of Michael Marshall Smith. I love his writing style and his 'crime novel meets supernatural bent' plots. Second, I watched The Intruders on BBC, so I knew what was going on. This novel is creepy and vague, and the end doesn't tie everything up in a neat package. The miniseries just spell things out more obviously (for better or worse), so you may finish the book still scratching your head. Not sure this is the best intro novel to Michael Marshall Smith - maybe read The Straw Men first to see if this is your type of story.
The show based on this was fascinating and ended too soon.
I was hoping this book, on the idea of being able to project one's soul by a small group of people who then lives through the centuries, had great potential. Much enjoyed, and rather creepy, though still was left wanting more of the story to play out.
