I was baffled by this - a disappointment after just having adored The Remains of the Day! I couldn't work this one out at all - a disparate array of elements that never seemed to tie together, housed in a 'detective' genre that seemed entirely unsuitable. Beyond me.
Vaguely enjoyable but not really my vibe. I picked up the book because I wanted something similar to Klara and the Sun or Never Let Me Go, and it just didnt have the same appeal.
I did enjoy listening to 1930s Chinese jazz while I read it though

DNF. Gave this 100 pages and it never hooked me. The themes I love in Ishiguro’s other novels are there but the writing is frustratingly circular. I can see how that might be the desired effect but it’s lost on me.

The first part of this book is engaging and enjoyable, especially the flashbacks to Christopher’s childhood in Shanghai (obviously, it’s Ishiguro).
But the latter part, when adult Christopher is running around Shanghai, was not worth seeing through to the end.
