5 stars | Will return to this every Advent

I first learned of Scott Erickson's art on Instagram from the Lazy Genius and immediately loved his art and how he uses art to convey deep meaning and emotion, so I purchased his Advent book. Every day of Advent had art to look at and reflect on and I am telling you, his art truly did make me stop and reflect. His writing for each day was poignant and made the normal messages of Advent seem fresh and new. But my favorite part of his book was the one word sentences at the end of each day. I think I must have journaled over 20 pages from just those sentences.

What Surprised Me Most: While I knew I would love the art in the book, I did not realize how Erickson would also use the written word to stop me in my tracks.

4.5 stars! Erickson's book helped me approach the Christmas story in a way I never have before and it was a great accompaniment to this advent season. I love the combination of visuals to contemplate and a short devotional. There was so much to think about that I'm planning on reading it again next year!

trying to not be afraid. but it's easier said than done. the weight of not knowing what to do next is terrifying and if that is what the glory of god feels like, i bow down in fear, trembling, and anger.

“May the doorway to Advent wonder be opened by the shocking biology of it all.”

Didn’t love the writing style at times, but overall an awesome, thought provoking message. Looking forward to picking it up next Christmas!

We really enjoyed this as a daily Advent reading! Erickson has created beautiful Advent-themed art and written inspiring reflections on the wonder of the incarnation.

Scott Erickson’s meditations and powerful artwork pull back the veil on the ornate and popularized representation of Advent to invite one to connect with God through down-to-Earth humanity, through being. And through simplicity comes reimagining and recentering with oneself and with God. A book I will return to, if not throughout the year, likely next Advent.
